Back in 1982, a young researcher wanted to quench his thirst on a blazing summer day. So he walked some distance to get to a vending machine only to find that all drinks had already sold out. It was a light bulb moment for the young researcher, he installed sensors that can remotely report storage quantity and temperature so he will always know how many drinks are in the machine and if they were cold enough to enjoy. Some say this is the first online machine that resembled the concept of Internet of Things (IoT)! Ever since then, IoT has been growing at an immense rate. In the past decade, the number of IoT devices has increased exponentially from around 15 billion in 2015 to an estimated 75 billion in 2025. This figure suggests that the IoT network is only going to get more complex than ever and your choice in implementing a capable and appropriate IoT gateway is critical in the efficiency of your IoT application and network.
